There is a River

Psalm 46:4

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”

“There is a river!” The psalmist says, from which streams make it’s way through the city of God. Looking forward from the writers day, stands The Church – the city on the hill. Here’s an encouraging picture of the never failing grace of God flowing through the Community of faith, God’s family of families.

“There is a river” of which all God’s people may drink from and be refreshed regardless of our circumstances! Keep in mind this follows a description of violent turmoil. The psalmist begins by saying “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

You’re not to fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea! Why? “There is a river,” the streams of which will reach you, satisfying your soul. An encouragement to place your hope in God, for in His providential care, He sees to it that the river of grace flows continually, securing you in your greatest hour of need.

The River has always been Here

From the river in Genesis 2:10, which watered the garden flowed from Eden, and from there separated into four headwaters; To the river the angel showed John in Revelation 22:1-2, the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, was flowing from the throne of God.

From Christ, that river flowed down through the middle of the great street of the city. On either side of it was the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations!

From one end of the Bible to the other, This river of life is seen flowing in, to, and through God’s people in every age throughout history. Wherever the river is seen, it brings times of refreshing for all who’ll drink from it.

The River is Within You

Jesus once stood up at a feast and in a loud voice said; “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said (referencing Isaiah 58:11), rivers of living water will flow from within them” (see John 7:37-38).

When I was a young believer we used to sing:

“I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me, makes the lame to walk, and the blind to see,

Opens prison doors sets the captives free, I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me.

Spring up oh well – Within my soul, Spring up oh well – And make me whole

Spring up oh well – And give to me That life abundantly.”

Whether you feel like you’re in a valley of hopelessness, in the middle of a desert experience, or in the midst of a whirlwind of trouble, God’s grace will find you. Remind yourself; “There is a river,” whose streams will make you glad, you’re the holy place where the Most High dwells, and you’ll Be Encouraged! – JSP
