90 Days of Prayer – Day Fifty Four

Unity-Where the Blessing Falls

Psalm 133:1-3
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”

Unity is a place of power where good things happen. Whenever and wherever God’s people are united in heart and mind, the grace of God washes over them like the waves of the sea breaking on the shoreline. David begins this psalm by calling attention to the benefits of being united behind one purpose. The original begins with “Behold” meaning to see or take notice of something.

Take notice how often the Scriptures as well as in your own experience demonstrates that unity is the place where God’s blessings abound. United praying makes all things possible to those who live by it. The power unleashed by united prayer is the very thing God delights in when His people call upon Him with one purpose. Imagine how the continued favor of God will settle on a people who actually lives in this Spirit birth unity.

God’s Presence dwells among a people united in prayer and purpose. The picture of the oil flowing in verse 2, typify’s the Holy Spirit’s anointing flowing falling on believers like the oil poured upon the priests of old. Like the morning dew falling on Mount Zion and refreshing the ground, God’s blessings fall upon His people who are living and praying together for God’s will to be done.

Paul called on the Church to work at maintaining the unity of the Spirit; “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3 ).  Among the many virtues of Christ, the Church is encouraged to “put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” (Colossians 3:14-15 ).

The Power of Spirit Imparted Unity

In verse one of this Psalm we are encouraged to take note of the blessings God’s Presence brings to genuine unity in fellowship. The immense spiritual power generated by a people united in purposeful praying cannot be overstated. The Scriptures are replete with examples of God’s Presence and power among His people when they are committed to one purpose, calling on the name of the Lord together. Consider these examples of God showing up during united prayer:

Acts 2:1-4
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

Acts 4:31
“And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”

It is true that there is strength in unity, how much more so when living and praying together in the unity the Holy Spirit gives. The book of Acts demonstrates the power of God’s Presence resting on the Church, united by the Spirit to advance the gospel of the Kingdom. Think of the possibilities available to the family, Church, city, state or nation, dwelling in unity committed to calling on God together.

I recall a line in song we used to sing that says; “Jesus on the inside working on the outside, Oh what a change in my life…”  That change is the result of the Spirit’s unity among a people united in Christ. His character is always formed within a people united in Him. That’s how good and pleasant things can be when God’s people dwell together in unity.
