A Banquet Like No Other

90 Days of Prayer – Day Seven

Psalm 36:8-10
They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart!”

We are royal guests at God’s banqueting table, invited to feast on the good things His Presence provides. David understood God’s providential care of His people, and the blessings accorded those who walk with Him. David wrote of the beauty of these frequent visits in the Presence of God when he said; “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” (Psalm 23:5-6)

It is in God’s presence that we “Taste and see that the LORD is good” (Psalm 34:8) and feast on “the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age”(Hebrews 6:5). The word “feast” in verse 8 is the verb “rawah” means “to be satiated,” “to soak,” “to drink one’s fill.”  While in the presence of God we are fully satisfied in his sufficiency, drinking from the fountain of life, having the eyes of our understanding enlightened with His light.

We come to see what “no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived— the things God has prepared for those who love him”(1 Corinthians 2:9). By revelation, we come to see all things infinite, as the Almighty reveals them to us at His banqueting table.  It is in the Spirit, alone with God that our perception of things in this life and in the life to come truly come into focus.

It is in God’s presence, seated at His table that we receive answers and provisions from His great storehouse.  It is in our growing intimacy with Him that He unfolds to us the wisdom of His word and the manner of His ways.  As we continue feasting on God’s word its power will take hold of our hearts and minds, we will begin to walk in the light of His truth and see things as He sees them.  In praying to hear what God is saying, we will say with David “For with You is the fountain of life; and in Your light we see light.

Jesus accomplished God’s will on earth by continually feasting at the Father’s banqueting table, he told his disciples “I have food to eat that you know nothing about” (John 4:32). Even in times of distress, David took his place at God’s banqueting table saying, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5).

With gratitude and confidence let’s take our place at God’s banqueting table. While in His presence drink freely from His fountain of life, truly enjoy tasting and seeing that the Lord is Good.  Be filled, Be enlightened, Be satisfied in God’s presence, and Be Encouraged! – JSP
