THE ENDURING POWER OF GOD’S WORD

Psalm 119:89

“Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.”

Isaiah 40:8
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

Both King David and the Prophet Isaiah state plainly that God’s Word stands the test of time. The fact that God’s Word “Endures forever” makes it timeless. This means that biblical truths are applicable to all generations in any age.

There is no escaping the timeless truths of Scripture, those who choose to disregard it will experience the unavoidable fact of having to be confronted with it: “There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will judge them at the last day” (John 12:48).

The Word God Speaks Will Accomplish Its Purpose

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10 -11).

Without doubt the Bible is a unique book. The Bible also known as the Word of God, has always been the most read, the most loved, and the most attacked piece of literature in human history. No one with even a basic understanding of the scriptures would argue that the written word is the inspired Word of God. Many attacks have been leveled against the Word of God throughout history.

Some of the most brilliant minds (misguided as they may have been) have attacked the credibility and authenticity of the scriptures, all to no avail. With the passing of time their names as well as their criticisms have faded into the past and have been largely forgotten, while the Bible continues to be the most widely sold and widely read book throughout all history…its credibility always intact.

The Sacred Scriptures

The Scriptures are divided into two parts, the Old and the New Testaments. The Bible contains sixty-six books, 39 Old Testament and 27 New Testament. We are told that these writings are of Divine origin and were directly revealed to the writers by God Himself.

God has revealed His Word to His Apostles and prophets throughout history. Peter vouched for the truth of the word of God when he wrote; “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.

For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”(2 Peter 1:20-21).  Jesus called all scriptures “truth” in His High Priestly prayer saying: “Your word is truth” (John 17:17).

The scriptures clearly state that Almighty God is all knowing, all powerful and infinitely wise. We are also told that fools reject His words to their own destruction. We are instructed time and time again throughout the scriptures to think, speak, and practice God’s word in daily life. This enables us to walk in line with all that God is doing.

The Bible calls for complete cooperation on the part of all believers.

We are instructed to live by the word of God and stand against any and all contradictory influences. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 that “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Paul also warned the Church at Colossae saying; “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

The Only Sure Foundation

Jesus said in Matthew 7:24 that those who listen to His words, and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who builds his house on the rock. The word picture is clear. Building a life according to the scriptures protects us and causes us to weather the storms of life more successfully than those who ignore the Word of God.

The Word of God is the only reliable foundation on which we can construct an accurate comprehensive worldview.  Paul instructed Timothy to depend upon the word of God when training people to live correctly;  “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be mature, and thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16- 17).

God’s Word is Powerful

Seeing that God is all powerful and all knowing, it stands to reason that His word has the power to reveal the secrets of our hears as well;  Psalm 119:130 says “The unfolding of Your words gives light, it gives understanding to the simple.”  The word of God sheds light on what is on the inside of us, as seen in the following verse; “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). The powerful impact that the light of the Scriptures has upon the subconscious, reveals all hidden and ulterior motives.

The productive power of God’s Word laid out in Isaiah 55:10-11 is clearly seen throughout history. Whenever He speaks about those things He has planned to do, His word carries with it the power to bring those plans to pass. Not one single prophetic utterance from the scriptures has ever failed to come to pass exactly as God said it would. A careful examination of history proves this in every instance.

The Power of God’s Word in Creation

The Creative power in God’s word is also seen in the opening passages of the Bible.
God demonstrates His absolute authority over all His created order by speaking the universe into existence as He wills. By His Word and His Word alone were all things created: At least nine times in Genesis chapter one we are told “God said” and things came into being just has He spoke it. This shows the Power of the words that come from God’s mouth.

David understood the wisdom and the power of God’s word over all creation and was inspired to write: in Psalm 33:4-6: “For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loves righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” We read again; “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word…” (Hebrews 1:3).

In considering these truths taught in the Bible, the validity of its wisdom supported by history, and proved by almost 40 years of my own experience. I will gladly continue to trust the scriptures as the supreme authority to guide my life, and to love God as the bible tells me to, as I continue living in the blessings He grants me by walking according to the enduring power of His written word.
