In The Secret Place

90 Days of Prayer  Day Seventy-Five

The Secret Place

Psalm 91:1
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

The Psalmist makes a definitive statement of the blessings associated with dwelling in God’s Presence. This passage can be accurately rendered “The one who dwells under the cover of the Most High, in the shadow of the Almighty he will lodge.”

I’m reminded of the exchange between God and Moses, where God says “When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by” (Exodus 33:22).  Dwelling in the shelter of the Most High God is an amazing place to be.

The Dwelling Place

God has prepared a dwelling place you, a place where you and He can meet together. Your place is found in Christ the rock of your salvation, the shelter of the Most High, where you can enjoy unbroken fellowship with Him. This is the place where you feel most at home. You are living under the cover of the Most High!

Your home is where you live; it’s the place where all your possessions are stored. Your dwelling is part of your identity. Everything you have placed in your home says something about you. This is where you are most comfortable and where you spend most of your life. This is a great illustration of your dwelling place with God.

The Resting Place

Many times having a home is referred to as “having a roof over your head. Here is another excellent example of dwelling in God’s Presence. Resting in the shadow of the Almighty is like having a roof over your head. The word “shelter” means “to cover,” “secrecy,” and “hiding place.”

The idea of secrecy is to keep something under cover by hiding it. God covered Moses with His hand while He passed by to protect him from the powerful effects of His Glory. God will cover you and protect you in the same way by hiding you in Christ.

The Psalmist in Psalm 63:7 says I sing in the shadow of your wings.” Dwelling in the shadow of the Most High is also the place where you’ll express yourself to God in song. Praise and worship come naturally to you when you are resting secure in His Presence, He is the roof over your head protecting you from the outside elements.

He is your shelter from every storm, He is your covering hiding you and all you have from the view of outsiders. In this unbroken fellowship with God you find your rest in the secret place.

My Refuge And My Fortress

The Psalmist proclaims ownership! “I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:2). This is reminiscent of the Shulammite who said My beloved is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies” (Song of Songs 2:16). The Psalmist too is so captivated by God, that all through the night he is thinking of all He has done for him.

He can no longer contain himself and breaks into song; my refuge! and my fortress! my God! in you I will trust! Have you ever had this experience while alone with God? You will if your dwelling is under the shadow of the Most High.

Feel at home resting in God’s Presence day of night. His secret place is found in any room of your house. Make God’s Presence your home and not just a place you visit from time to time. Live in the shelter of His Presence. Whether you awake in the morning or in the middle of the night you are still under the shadow of His wings. Be free to be yourself with Him, Be at rest in His Presence, and Be Encouraged! -JSP
